Birthday Preasent

I was lucky enough to get some goodies from Heroics and Ros for my birthday. These were ordered with the upcoming Crisis Point game in mind, and are mainly infantry and engineering equipment for my '80s Americans, no M1 Abrams or M60s. To maintain the balance some Soviet kit was also ordered, including some of the newer T55As and T55AM2Bs, which look great.

There are a few helos for the Yanks, but more about those another day. I'll post some more pics soon when they are cleaned up and based and show how they fit in with my existing units.

Trees and Hedges.

With the next Crisis point game due in September I thought it was time to start on some basic terrain items we might need for the game. Some time ago I purchased a bag of 100 trees from a Chinese company on ebay for only a few quid.

Not the best looking trees, but for 5p each still a bargain. The picture doesn't show it but they are a very bright green. Since you can never have too many trees I have tried to improve them a little with the following results.

Before and after.
With plenty of PVA glue and some scatter to fill in the spaces between the bands of folliage and then a quick spray with some green paint I now have a tree that looks, to my eye, a bit more like a tree.
As well as doing some trees I've had a go at some hedges. Lolly sticks for bases  textured with some sand, a quick paint and some Woodland scenics  clump foliage glued onto them. Quick and easy and not too bad looking.

Only a hundred more to go!

I was lucky to take part in this years Crisis point game held in  Broughton and hosted by the Deeside Defenders wargames club. We arrived on the Friday afternoon and set up for the following 2 days of gaming.

The two sides consisted of Soviets and East Germans (oddly enough no Czech forces considering the game was set on the Czech/German border), vs NATO, consisting of West German, American, Canadian and French forces. Here are the pictures I took whilst playing as American 2nd Battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division.

A great couple of days gaming and socialising was had by all. For more pictures and a detailed after action visit Richard Philips " Red Storm" blog   http://redstorm2016.blogspot.co.uk/

Once again a game slightly out of scale, this time 20mm world war 2. This was based on the Sibret scenario from the "Battle of the Bulge" scenario book using  Rapid Fire WW2 rules.

Close game came down to the last turn but the Americans left it too late and it ended a draw.

West Germans vs Soviets pt 2

Played some time ago, we decided to fight the previous battle to some kind of a conclusion. We allowed both sides some limited re-deployment. To this end the German player, Danny, filtered more troops into the town to consolidate his hold on that objective and redeployed some of his armour. The Soviets, Andy and myself, dug in on the objective we held and redeployed some infantry and armour for a cunning flank attack.

...and this is about were we called it. Not shown the soviets deployed onto the crest and occupied the German's abandoned positions, but with no direct armour support Danny started to redeploy his Leopard 2s to support his infantry attempt to retake the objective. We decided on a minor Soviet victory. Figures and vehicles were Dan's and mine, terrain the clubs and my collection.

Joy of 6- work in progress.

A few of us who took part in the Arctic Strike weekend a few years ago are hoping to put on a demo game at the Joy of 6 show on the 19th July 2015 in Sheffield. We are planing to re fight the Bjervik table which was a draw, but with the Soviets having a slight advantage over the NATO forces. Sat around for a long time in the garage of dead metal have been some models that need finishing to complete my Soviet Naval Infantry and Airborne forces.
To complete my Airborne composite artillery batteries I needed some BM21V Grad rocket launchers. These are  cut down version of the standard BM21 rocket launcher but with a reduced number of tubes and mounted onto a Gaz 66 chassis. Unfortunately the only company to make these was Skytrex and then only in packs of 5. They are now available from Heroics & Ross and are labeled as Grad P rocket launcher(M777).. Fortunately Richard  Phillips was good enough to let me have a couple at last years Crisis Point game, so here they are;
BM21V

BM21V
A simple model, but very clean and well cast. Heroics and Ross have been releasing quite a few new models sculpted by Ian Armstrong. One of these is a T55AM2B(SM95), an up armoured version with improved optics and a laser range finder. These are slightly more expensive at 65p each, rather than their normal price of 50p for a tank, but the quality more than warrants this. These will be used for my Soviet Naval Infantry armoured battalion, mainly because they are such nice models. The HQ consists of a T55AM2B and a H&R BTR60 PA command vehicle(SM77).

I have also had some Soviet artillery lying around for some time, these are to complete my motor rifle regiment in BTRs and consist of another 3 gun batteries of D30 122mm field guns( Scotia models RM0108) and 3 gun batteries of D20 152mm field guns( H&R SM33) all with H&R crew figures.

Finally to complete my SA8 AA regiment 2 more H&R SA8 Geckos(SM41). I  love these models and they just look the part.

Was going to post some British pieces for Septembers crisis point but I've a few more pieces for the Battle of Bjervik to get on with first. A couple of artillery spotters in the form of a pair of Heroics and Ros MT-LBu(ARCV) (SM13).

With part of the Bjervik scenario possibly involving an amphibious phase I thought it was time to invest in some landing craft. The standard Soviet landing craft was, and still is the Ondatra class. Unfortunately no one makes a model of these, but they do have a passing resemblance to the WW2 allied  LCM(3), but with a larger wheelhouse. Managed to get these on E-Bay from Ambhimods  code IRS3b.

With UAZ 469 Field car
Size wise they are quite a bit shorter than the Ondatra class but will do at a push as the loads will only be representative ie a single truck or vehicle although a BTR60 is a tight fit.

Had a short notice, bring what you fancy Rapid fire game using my Americans and Danny's late war Germans. All terrain provided by Grimsby Wargames Club . I arrived first and set up the table. I thought it would be a good idea to place a river and 2 bridges, somthing I immediately regretted once we started the game.

All in all a good game, called it a draw  as the Germans had lost 1 infantry battalion and the 2nd was stretched quite thinly and the Americans had got a toe hold in the town but had yet to take control of it. The rivers seriously impeded the American advance so their armour was relegated to a supporting roll, leaving the infantry to gain control of the bridges.

This years Crisis Point game is "The Battle for Hannover". This year I have decided to play as British and field units from the British Army of the Rhine. Part of the forces I might deploy are a battalion of the Parachute Regiment, 3 companies of para infantry and supports.

I was fortunate to win some models on Ebay, 10 FV432+Rarden Turret. Great I thought until I realised The British Army only made 13 and they were used by the Berlin Brigade! So what to do with 10 models I couldn't use? The hulls with a little work could be used for ambulances but also for transport for my engineers. At a recent military vehicle show I saw this, an FV432 with a stowage "bin" over the rear hatch.

So I decided to make 3 of these;

The addition of some stowage and a cammo net hides the hole were the turret would have been.

I completed these about 5 years ago as an opfor for my Soviets when I first started playing Cold War Commander. These cold war warriors will form part of my British Armored Brigade at the Crisis point game in September. The regiment consists of 12 Chieftain tanks(BM03), an HQ,an FAC in a landrover(BM32) ,an FAO in a FV432+Cymbeline radar(BM11), a Guided weapons troop in FV432+Swingfire(BM24) and a pair of Scorpion tanks(BM05) used as recce. All models are Heroics and Ros.

Better late than never some pictures from last years Crisis point game. This proved to be the largest game yet with about 300 square feet of playing area. Using the Mat o War cloths from the Grimsby Wargames Society  we were able to cover the whole table, which tied everything together very nicely.

All the terrain Richard Phillips, Andy Canham,Grimsby Wargames Society and my own.

I have recently been in contact with a former member of the Grimsby Wargaming Society, Rob,who expressed a wish to get back in to gaming. Rob had put together a very nice 6mm Cold War French force and wanted to give the Cold War Commander ruleset ago. As Rob had never played CWC before I offered to referee and help him with the rules and Andy B would provide his Soviet opposition. Rob's units are GHQ and CnC models, the Soviets are Heroics and Ros, the terrain was mine and the clubs.

All in all a very enjoyable game. The French initially gave as good as they got, but the fragility of the lighter French armor meant they struggled to slug it out with the Soviets. With the bulk of the French infantry ensconced in one of the towns and the Soviets poised to put in a two pronged assault we called it as an overall Soviet victory.

Played a game of ACW using the Black Powder rules a few weeks back against Danny. The table was set up with a few farms, woods and plenty of fences to give that close terrain ACW look that we like so much. Dan supplied the Union forces and I used my Confederates, the terrain is the clubs and was made by various members. This was basically a line 'em up and set 'em off game, each side having around 20 regiments each, organised into 5 union and 4 Confederate brigades. Dan deployed all his regiments in line and I deployed in column. This initial deployment did have an effect on the early movement as Dan struggled to get going, failing a number of command rolls, whilst the Rebs where able to take advantage of the roads and bonuses given in the rules to units in column  to get to their initial objectives.

All in all a very good game. Even with quite large forces on both sides we managed about 12 turns and we had reached a stage where we could call it a victory for the boys in grey. The 2 Union brigades on either flank had been broken and the Rebs had lost only 1 regiment, though a number had taken casualties. The next game we play we will be trying out the rules suggested in the new "Glory Hallelujah" supplement from Warlord Games, which should sort out some of the anomalies in the original  rules.

Dan and myself got together to play another American Civil War game using Black Powder and this time some of the new rules from the Glory Halleluja supplement. Another stand 'em up and knock 'em down game. Dan is getting better with the rules now so we called this one a draw but we both felt if we had played on it would have swung in the Union's favour.

The rules from the supplement do add a bit more flavour of the Civil War. We particularly like the sniper and officer casualty rules as well as the new rules for units passing through one another and the way six gun batteries are now handled, the jury's still out on the Whipped rule as neither of us  thought it worked well.
All figures Danny's and my own, the terrain Grimsby Wargames Society.
